Project Kapusa

Buckle up, because we're about to take you on a rollercoaster that began in the crazy year that was 2020. Yes, the year of twists and turns! In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when uncertainty gripped the world, the Surinamese economy was totally down since no flights were coming in which also meant no tourists. The impact was so big that our sales dropped by almost 90%.

Empowering 7 New Villages
We almost gave up but then a miracle happened. We got the opportunity to develop projects in 7 new villages. Although we were a little bit heartbroken by the Covid situation, we finally had time to expand our working field. For this project, we traveled to South and West Suriname which was quite an adventure. 

One of these villages is Botopasi, a Saramaccan village in Sipaliwini. Botopasi is on the Surinam river and is only reachable by boat. It’s 183 kilometers away from Paramaribo and one of our favorite destinations. The boat trip is breathtaking since you are surrounded by forest and animal sounds. 

From Skill to Success

When we first arrived at Botopasi we were warmly welcomed by 23 women who wanted to participate in the sewing workshop. We got overwhelmed and the workshops were a little bit crowded and chaotic but exciting at the same time. Eventually, 5 motivated women got ready to make our next item named Kapusa. This means bucket hat in the Saramaccan language. This item is quite difficult to make, which means they are very skilled in sewing. We went back 2 times and not long after that, they started producing. This item is now part of our collection and is very popular. We think this is a keeper.
